Feeding guide for the Great Dane
The Great Dane is a giant breed, and nutrition plays a decisive role in the bone and joint development of the puppy. Excess calcium or calories speeds up growth and increases the risk of orthopedic problems.
In the first 12 months, choose a food specifically formulated for giant-breed puppies. It balances calcium and phosphorus in the right proportion and controls caloric density — essential for a Great Dane that grows so fast.
Split the daily amount into 3 meals until 6 months of age and into 2 after that. Avoid intense exercise right after eating, because of the breed's predisposition to gastric torsion (bloat).
In adulthood, keep the weight under control: an overweight Great Dane overloads joints that already work at their limit. A lean, well-fed Great Dane is a healthier and longer-lived giant.
